Autumn is called the harvest season for a reason. If you haven’t started your fall garden yet, it’s time to catch up. There are so many veggies that you can plant that won’t take too long to spring to life. We will stay that while many plants can thrive in the fall, some handle the brisk weather a little better than others. Check out this guide to learn what you should grow.
Bulbs
Before we get into what veggies you can grow, let’s talk about flowers. You should start on all your spring-blooming bulbs when fall begins. This includes tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils. They need time to sleep during the frosty weather before they pop up when warm temperatures hit. Wait until the weather in your area drops down to the crisp 50s before you go out to plant your tulips. The last thing you want is for the bulbs to bloom too soon and be killed off by frost. So, the best time to place your bulbs is in late October, early November.
Beans
Now that flowers are out of the way, we’re going to go over what to plant in a fall garden as far as veggies go. The first is the beans. You can plant them in the fall and expect to get a rich harvest all the way up until the winter frost hits. If you want to get the most out of your bean plants, you can start planting them a little bit before fall. They can handle the hot summer sunshine. Keep in mind that if you’re growing pole beans, you’ll need to pick up a trellis. If you aren’t planting pole beans, you’re fine to not use one.
Beets
Sow your beet seeds out during the summer and give them a little bit of water to help push their germination along. That’s all they need to thrive in the fall. If you’re planning on planting taller crops like tomatoes in the summer too, plant the beets behind them. This way when the tomatoes spring to life, they’ll provide some shade for the beet crop. When the cooler weather hits and you remove the tomatoes from your garden, the beets will grow beautifully. These are only a few tips for growing beets.
